When contractors and fencing suppliers think of steel fence posts, they often picture the traditional round design. However, C-Posts offer a purpose-built alternative designed for driven installation and long-term performance. Learn what sets C-Posts apart with these frequently asked questions about installation, design and more.

What is a C-Post?

C-Post A C-Post is a continuously galvanized, roll-formed steel fence post with an open channel, C-shaped profile. Its design supports driven installation but also allows for traditional dig-and-set methods when required. Manufactured from steel with a minimum yield strength of 50,000 psi, the C-Post and C-Top Rail are coated on a continuous Galv line with 4 oz. of zinc per sq. ft. in accordance with ASTM F1043.

How are C-Posts Installed?

C-Posts give you the flexibility to use the installation method that works best for you. They can be set, or they can be driven directly into the ground using manual or pneumatic driver attachments. The C-shaped profile is formed to expand, or bell, at the base as it is driven, so it can anchor in the soil without concrete if you choose.

How Do C-Posts Reduce Installation Time?

Installing a fence with traditional round posts can be time-consuming. From digging holes to pouring concrete, many hours of labor are required for a quality installation. The C-Post’s drive-in design gives you the option to avoid that excavation and concrete work, allowing posts to be driven directly into the soil.

Can C-Posts be set in concrete?

Yes. Although C-Posts are often referred to as no-dig fence posts, they can be installed using traditional dig-and-set methods if project specifications or site conditions require concrete footings.

Can Any Installer Work With C-Posts?

Yes. C-Posts can be driven using the same standard post-driving equipment commonly used for round posts, with no specialized machinery required. While proper equipment and experience are always important for mechanical driving, C-Posts offer installation flexibility, allowing contractors to use the methods and tools their crews already rely on.

Can C-Posts Be Used in Rough Terrain?

Yes. C-Posts can be used in many uneven or challenging site conditions, including sloped grades and compacted soils. In rocky or dense ground, pilot holes may be recommended to ensure proper alignment and depth. As with any fencing system, soil conditions should be evaluated to determine the most appropriate installation method.

Why Should I Choose C-Posts VS. Round Posts?

Besides the speed and ease of installation, C-Posts offer a number of advantages vs round posts:

  • Weather resistance: The belling or expansion at the base prevents the post from frost heaving during cold weather. Its open “C” profile forms a vertical channel that resists bending and flexing, remaining stable in winds up to 70 mph.
  • Corrosion prevention: The open channel design promotes airflow, reducing moisture buildup. A uniform zinc coating offers further corrosion protection.
  • No mushrooming: Because C-Posts bell at the base rather than compressing at the top, they prevent the deformation common with driven round posts, reducing the risk of cracking, bending or corrosion.
  • U.S. manufacturing:  Gregory Fence products are made from steel that is melted and manufactured in the U.S.A. C-Posts are Buy American Act compliant.
  • Performance standards: Manufactured from high-strength steel with a minimum 50,000-pound yield, C-Posts meet ASTM A1011 standards. and exceed Schedule 40 specifications.

What makes C-Posts stronger?

C-Posts are manufactured from continuously galvanized steel and coated with zinc both inside and out. The thicker sidewalls create greater strength and durability.

What Applications Can C-Posts Be Used In?

C-Posts are versatile and designed to be a true alternative to round fence posts in most chain link or metal fence applications. They’re used in everyday residential and commercial fencing, standard perimeter chain link fences and higher-security installations like industrial sites, detention facilities and government or military projects. With multiple profiles (standard, heavy and Super C), the same C-Post family can cover everything from basic property lines to high-security perimeters. They can be used with metal or wood fencing.
