Standing firm in the rugged West Virginia mountains, Gregory Highway’s Guardian 5 (G5) barrier system is engineered for locations where roadway safety performance matters most.

For more than four decades, the West Virginia Department of Transportation has faced the challenge of improving truck containment along demanding mountain corridors, where steep grades and heavy commercial traffic can increase the consequences of a roadway departure.

In 2025, Guardian 5 was installed along this section of roadway as part of WVDOT’s effort to address that long-standing truck containment challenge.

On June 2, 2026, a fully loaded tractor-trailer lost braking capability while descending a steep grade in West Virginia, creating the potential for a severe crash involving loss of control and significant consequences beyond the roadway.

After the tractor-trailer lost braking capability, the vehicle impacted a section of Gregory Highway’s Guardian 5 barrier system. The G5 contained the vehicle within the roadway and prevented it from continuing over the embankment.

Engineered for Demanding Roadway Conditions

Guardian 5 is engineered to meet MASH Test Level 5 (TL-5) standards and is designed to help contain and redirect fully loaded 80,000-pound vehicles.

For agencies like the West Virginia Department of Transportation, truck containment in mountainous terrain is not a new challenge. Steep grades, heavy truck traffic, bridge infrastructure, drainage requirements, and limited roadside recovery areas can make barrier selection especially important.

Guardian 5 is well suited for applications including:

  • Heavy truck traffic corridors
  • Steep grades and mountainous terrain
  • Roadside or Median barrier applications
  • Bridge approaches and bridge pier protection
  • Areas with significant drainage or snow build-up concerns
  • Locations where concrete barriers may present installation or site challenges

With 80,000-psi yield-strength steel W-beam and Thrie-beam panels, innovative energy-absorbing technology, and an open-bottom design that accommodates efficient roadway drainage, the G5 delivers a unique combination of strength, safety, and practicality, making it an ideal solution for high-containment applications.

For transportation agencies working to address the long-standing challenge of heavy-vehicle containment, Guardian 5 provides a high-performance steel alternative to traditional concrete barrier systems in locations where containment, installation flexibility, drainage, and long-term performance matter.
