An Untimely Accident

A late-night drive on a South Carolina highway ended abruptly when a car crested a hill and crashed in work zone.

Fortunately, every life on the scene was spared. But that’s not always the case.

A National Crisis

According to the National Highway of Traffic Safety Administration, there were more than 43,000 highway deaths in the United States in 2021.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, passed in 2021, will invest $110 billion nation-wide to pave the way for roads and bridges to be repaired. The plan aims to make a transportation system with "safer people, safer roads, safer vehicles, safer speeds, and better post-crash care." It will also create an estimated 4,000 more work zones in the next two years, an increase of 18%. That increase alone could put 155 more roadside workers at risk of a fatal accident.

“This crisis on our roads is urgent and preventable,” said Dr. Steven Cliff of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. He called for state and local officials to join the effort. “All of our lives depend on it.”

A Safety Solution from Gregory Industries

The lives of those involved in the South Carolina crash, were spared because of the TTMA 200. The car hit a TTMA 200 head on, protecting a highway sweeping truck ahead of it. A direct impact on anything solid would have resulted in a tragic ending. But the TTMA’s tube busting technology absorbed the impact of a crash and saved the lives of the work crew and the driver.

Gregory Highway is committed to keeping our roads safe with the TTMA 200.

“We specialize in safer people, safer roads, and post-crash care,” said Jeff Grover, Vice President of Highway Products at Gregory Industries. “Our products are designed to save lives!”

The TTMA 200 is a Trailer Truck Mounted Attenuator. Stated simply, it’s the directional signage with blinking lights, that can be seen on the back of trailers on the highway. Its galvanized steel parts are made to last and to be used in virtually any highway environment. In the event of a crash, the parts can be replaced, resulting in a smart long-term investment.

This is particularly helpful for motorists, who have little protection on the roads. The TTMA 200 helps prevent death and serious injury, because the attenuator softens the impact.

TTMA-200 Advantages

  • Doesn’t require host vehicle modification
  • Open frame system is easy to maintain and repair
  • Built for stability, will not rotate in the wind
  • No cartridges needed
  • Versatile set-up can be used in any highway environment
